I just felt like doing this all of a sudden. Female version of Fabien. I started getting too into it, so I made up this alternate route. If Fabien were a girl...

In 1890 France--

When he was young, he played with necromancy. His mother would teach him skills. He could study science freely because education was for men.

Her mother would try to teach her necromancy, but her father frowned upon her studying too much. It would ruin her eyes, he said, and it was unsightly for a girl to read about skeletons. She has minimal knowledge of necromancy.

He was self-assured and a daydreamer. Let others look down on him. Let them make fun of him. He could always escape to his books and play with the dead. His mother supported him, so it was fine.

She would wonder about the universe, but her father would rebuke her. She looked too clueless, he said. She has to be graceful so he can marry her off. When she attempts to occupy herself with music or writing, he sends her to be disciplined. She's too stubborn.

He practiced necromancy more, now, completely enraptured by the art.

She never has a chance; all she wants is her parents' approval, but father hardly looks at her, and mother is too distant, unable to share necromancy with her.

When his father found out about his son practicing necromancy, he tried to throw him into the fireplace, but the boy's mother stopped him. Father abandoned them.

When her father finds the corpse of a crow-like creature in her room--her mother gave it to her some years back--he almost murders her. Her mother stops him in time, and he leaves. But the girl is bitter. She is bitter at her mother for practicing necromancy. Her mother is the reason men look down on women, she thinks. Because women do despicable things like communicating with the dead.

With her father gone, she wants to leave. A strange boy offers to help her, and she accepts. Little did she know that he would try to murder her later.

He caught a fatal illness. Within the year, he died. His mother, though, preserved him and attempted to revive him.

She is in poor health. Psychologically and physically she is weak. In her sickly state, she hangs herself. But her mother cries because she never knew her daughter; and she revives her daughter to give her another chance to live.

Distraught over his mother's death, lonely in the empty house, but not utterly hopeless, he possessed his mother's dead body to keep his house and access the archives of necromancy. Eventually, he recovered.

She is oddly amused, but will not recover for years. She is still bitter. The authorities confiscate her house and send her to an orphanage, but a few months later, she runs away.

He made up with his father by sharing a cup of his mother's favorite tea. Then he found the circus and joined it.

She has no skill worthy of the circus, but she is cunning. She visits her father secretly to stab a knife into his portrait, just so he knows she's alive. Then she becomes a sample in a university because of her undead body. They perform dissections, test medications on her, and study her. Gradually she gains enough knowledge in the medical field to become a decent physician.

She finds the circus and joins it, as a medic.
